There are two things I love about the Internet age we live in now. First, is that you can find anything...and I mean anything...on the Web. Just look at your search history, and you'll see the randomness of information you are seeking. My most recent searches include "number one song the week I was born" to "corner bookshelf" to "goody two shoes," and that's just the beginning of the odds and ends of information you can find online. My second favorite things about the Internet is that you can share all of this with just about anyone. Sometimes this seem a little invasive and scary, but, in the end, it affords us with this vast smorgasbord of information that we can access almost instantaneously from almost anywhere in the world. And, for me, that is awesome and exciting.

What's even better is the amount of great ideas that I get from the Web. I no longer have to subscribe to a bunch of magazines or be an insider in a certain industry to get information about said industry. All I have to do is go online, type in a few words, and, BAM, it's right there in front of me.

Houzz

Case in point, home decorating. I always enjoyed browsing through my mom's Better Homes & Gardens or Country Living magazines, getting ideas on how to decorate my home. I also enjoyed (and still do) watching HGTV for new trends, styles, and unique ways of decorating. But, with the dawn of the Internet and mobile apps, which make browsing this vast network of information even more accessible, we've got sites like Houzz and Pinterest offering tons of ideas from all sorts of people and professionals that you can access and keep track of in your own personal virtual scrapbook.

I can't get enough of these sites/apps. They are fantastic, and I've gotten so many cool and unique ideas from them. I could seriously spend a day browsing through both the Pinterest community of images and Houzz's large collection of home decorating and remodeling photos. And, then there are the blogs! You can find a blog for whatever interests you, and get tons of information and ideas about those interests. I have a small but growing list of blogs that I try to frequent when time permits. You can check out some of them on the right side bar of this blog.

Now that I've shared a couple of my favorite go-to websites for ideas and inspirations, tell me what sites you like to visit to get inspired.

Change is Good

It's been coming. Change. I'm not a big fan of change, but sometimes it is needed and sometimes it is necessary. For the past five years, I've dutifully scoured the web for great fashions at affordable prices and presented them to fellow Bargain Chic followers. It has been fun, it has been informative, and it has been sometimes exhaustive. I've also expanded the original intent of the blog to not just include comparable designer looks for less, but great deals I've found on the web. From wedding dresses to home furnishings, I've run the gamut of bargain chic finds.

But, now, I've grown a little weary of my blog. I want to write about things other than fashion -- about things that interest me, that are being talked about at the water-cooler, on the news, and in my life. This requires me to be more than just a bargain fashion reporter, but someone who tells stories, mulls over issues-of-the-day, and comments on what makes me and others tick. I still want to share my fashion obsessions, my take on award show gowns, and places on the web where you can find amazing deals and steals, but those will be in addition to everything else that's important to me.

So, in the coming months, I'll be transitioning to a new platform. I'm hoping to change the look and logo of Bargain Chic, and I am hoping to come up with a new, snazzy name that will encompass everything this blog will be about. I hope you will continue to follow me, enjoy what I have to say, and comment on it. A blog cannot sustain on posts alone -- I need your input, your insights, and your encouragement to keep this small but fun blog going.

If you have any suggestions on names, or comments on the upcoming changes, feel free to leave a comment or two.

Searching for the Perfect Chariot

Sorry for my lack of activity lately, and for the more than usual sporadic postings. I'm in the midst of a graduate literature class that has me writing for the pleasure of getting an A rather than for the pleasure of entertaining my small but loyal followers. I thought I would put together something I had been working on, but kept putting off posting because... well...when I have some free time, I'm usually watching old episodes of Ally McBeal or 30 Rock on my Netflix. I digress...

Because I've been spending every night and weekend stuck to my home office chair, typing away at my computer trying to come up with something prolific to write about The Waste Land or Hemingway, I started thinking it might be time to get a new office chair. Something cute and comfy came to mind, but what's out there is mostly boring, black, leather monstrosities that cost an arm and a leg. I get it -- you spend most of your day sitting in these things -- but that doesn't mean what you sit in can't be chic and affordable.

What's Nude?

Nude. It's a tough color to pull off, and, well, it's an even tougher look to feel confident in. But hang-ups aside, wearing nude and even being in the nude usually makes a woman feel sexy and sultry, vivacious and daring. You're taking a risk -- exposing yourself -- by wearing nude. Even if you don't necessarily feel confident, wearing nude will instantly give you the persona of someone who is willing to reveal a side of them that they don't often reveal to the world. So, try a little nudity in your life -- even if it is just with a pair of shoes.

Remembering 9-11

10 years. Amazing. It seems so long ago, and yet also like it was just yesterday. I was 24. Living at home. Looking for work. Trying to figure out my life. My sister's best friend was living in NYC. She tried calling him all day. She finally heard his voice, and she cried. My mom's good friend was also in NYC. She worked not far from the World Trade Center. She was safe, thank God. My good friend's sister worked near the Pentagon, but again, she was safe. I was lucky that the people in my life were spared the grief and horror of that day. But that doesn't lessen my grief -- it didn't lessen the tears I shed then and the tears I shed today. Ten years have come and gone. We've had wars, and death, and tragedy, and hope, and grace, and love. But without the countless broken hearts from that day, we wouldn't have been able to open them up to new beginnings and the chance for something better.

I've Got Some Learnin' to Do

I have taken the plunge. Almost ten years ago, I started my Master's degree in English, and finally, after way too many false starts, decided to finish what I started. It has been nerve-wracking and anxiety-inducing, but I'm trying my hardest to push through those feelings, and just do the one thing I know I really want to do.

I've managed to pass my first class already (with an A+ no less), and now I am on to my next one. This one is a little more intense. It's a survey on 20th century American literature, and that means, a lot of reading, a lot of writing, and a lot of analyzing. All things I am good at and actually enjoy, but just a little apprehensive about my abilities. Nevertheless, I just keep telling myself, "All you can do is the best you can do." And that seems to be helping.

And as I finished up my first writing assignment for the class, I started thinking about my fun, little blog here. I realized I had been neglecting it for awhile. The classes I've been taking have put a damper on my free time, but I thought why not take a few moments to let everyone know what's been going on with me, and while I'm at it also showcase some school (and work) supplies that are fun and chic. I figured, when the stress of work and school starts to get to you, you can at least enjoy looking at and using some of the whimsical and delightful tool of your trade.

Kohls is my final budget-busting, bargain-chic store in this three part series. Its amazing prices and lower-end designer offerings makes Kohls a must-visit store when looking for a fabulous deal. You can't go wrong with the Simply Vera line, and the Dana Buchman and Lauren Conrad lines. Kohls has done a fabulous job at getting top designers to make clothes for the budget-conscious consumer. Although they may not always be quite as fabulous as the originals, they are, nevertheless, just as stylish and about a fraction of the price. Who can argue with that?!

JcPenny has been around for-ever. In fact, according to Wikipedia, the JcPenny company was incorporated in 1913. So, for nearly a hundred years, JcPenny has been around. And, I'm sure every single person in America has been to a JcPennys at least once in their lives. It's pure Americana. Great-grandmas, grandmas, and mothers have bought clothes, home goods, home furnishings, and maybe even had their family portrait taken at a JcPennys.

My fondest memory of JcPenny is my Mom bringing home that big, thick catalog and the two of us sitting together look through it, picking out my favorite outfits and toys for my Christmas wishlist. It was always so exciting to see what was new for the upcoming season and to start planning all my fabulous back-to-school, holiday and summertime outfits.

And what made it even better was the price! JcPennys has always been reasonably priced, but never lacking in quality or style. As an adolescent, I had no concept of a budget, but as an adult, I can look back and realize that saving money doesn't mean you have to sacrifice style or substance. I'm glad that JcPenny continues its tradition of offering moderately priced apparel that is just as chic as more expensive department stores.

The economy for the last four years has been a helluva rollercoaster ride for most people. At some point you or some you know has dealt with underwater mortgages, foreclosures, unemployment, or a drained 401K account. Our financial senses have taken a beating, and we have been forced to reexamine our outlook on how we spend our money.

I am lucky to have learned early on what I consider the golden rule when it comes to finance: do not spend more than you have. It seems simple enough, right? Well, with credit cards and enticing financing options and the idea of always having to keep up with the Joneses, we've become a nation of financial nincompoops. Sure, we all want things, but do we all need them? If you don't have the money to buy that fabulous designer purse that you see in all the magazines, then don't buy it. If you can't afford to makeover your kitchen like you saw on HGTV, then starting saving money and do it little by little. And, if you feel like you have to eat out at that new restaurant, then wait a little longer until a smoking deal come up on Groupon.

You can blame society, peer-pressure or The Real Housewives reality shows, but honestly the only one to blame is yourself. You can be fabulous and cool and oh so chic without spending thousands and thousands of dollars on things that mean nothing more than: "look at me, I am broke, but I still managed to buy this ridiculously priced pair of shoes." If you truly insist on having an overpriced designer wardrobe or that expensive Pottery Barn leather sofa, then plan for it: sacrifice, save, and savor the fact that you worked hard to get something you wanted.

In the meantime, the best way to start saving for those big ticket items is to start making wiser decisions on the items you can be more frugal with. There are tons of clothing stores that offer designer-inspired looks at a bargain price, and in my next posts I'll be highlighting a few of them. These stores offer a lot of great basic items that can last you a while and some trendier items that can be fun for a season. Whatever styles you choose, I guarantee they'll be a perfect addition to any bargain chic-ette's closet.

First up is Old Navy. A great bargain store for t-shirts, jeans, and flip-flops, but also a fantastic place to find items that you can wear to work, to after-work shindigs, and to weekend fetes. Here's an example of an outfit I pulled together from items on the Old Navy website. It's classy, it's sexy, and it's priced oh-so-nice!

It's impossibly hot right now in Phoenix, and I'm starting to dream of the days when temperatures are tolerable and I can be outside for more than five minutes. Sailing through the Desert

Living in Phoenix, I am landlocked by desert, which means my only access to any seafaring is tubing down the Salt River or playing with toy boats in my bathtub. The city is surrounded by several man-made lakes, and there is a much-ballyhooed urban "lake," but seafaring really looses its panache when you are doing it from a speedboat or catamaran.

I'll admit, I have never really had any seafaring experiences -- unless you want to count a harbor cruise around San Diego Bay or a ferry ride to Ellis Island. And I am not sure I'd be the picture perfect Poseidon of the sea. I'd probably be hanging on for dear life as my captain -- a likely twin of Jack Sparrow -- hoisted the sails or battened down the hatches (whatever that means).

But that won't stop me from imagining an experience similar to the made-up scenarios in J.Crew catalogs. I picture myself on a strikingly white sailboat with a handsome captain, blustery ocean breezes whipping through my perfectly weathered mane, wearing a cute nautical-inspired outfit.

Of course it is all about the clothes! More than my love of the sea and cute sailors, is my love of nautical stripes. And, I love them on everything from dresses to shoes to handbags. No matter what it adorns, the nautical stripe makes anything look fresh and easy. And just because I don't live near the sea or own a sailboat, doesn't mean a desert dweller like myself can't look the part. I say if you can't be at the sea, at least look like you are. And here are some great example of bringing the sea to your style without having to find a boat and a cute captain.

Mission Impossible: The Perfect Couch

I'm on a mission to find the perfect leather couch. I have three requirements I like to call my couch trinity: 1. It's comfortable. (Isn't that a prerequisite for everyone?!) 2. It's stylish. 3. It can get dirty and still look clean. These three simple requirements seem easy enough to find, right? Well, that is until I add my rule that governs nearly everything I buy: it must be a bargain.

It ain't easy to find all three on the cheap. It always seems that one of the requirements is lacking, but I will not let that stand in my way. I shall charge forth with fortitude! The Art of Words

I am a big fan of words. I love reading them, writing them, understanding them, and even looking at them -- especially when it is done in an artistic way. I think my interest in typography can be attributed to my old college roommate. Tobi was a graphic design major, who had an infinity for typography. I remember watching her painstakingly choose a font for her projects -- trying to figure out which one would covey the message she was trying give. She was quite the master at it; and after graduating, that craft and skill became one of her trademarks.

Coupled with my appreciation for the art of typography, I've also always had an eye for symmetry -- almost an obsessiveness with it. I like things straight, parallel to each other, patterns that conform in number (especially three) and a desire to center things. I guess the best way to fully understand my slight OCD behavior is to think Jeff Lewis of Bravo's Flipping Out fame, but dialed down by about 50%.

With my interest in words, typography and symmetry, I think it is pretty safe to say, I overall enjoy the art of language -- whether that be in the simplest form of words on paper or the tools used to craft those words on paper. Here are some great finds -- some vintage and some not -- that I found on Etsy (a fantastic place for finding handcrafted items). They are all perfect examples of why I love how letters, words and meaning combine to creating brilliant art.

Swimming Into Summer

We're heading into summer, and here in Phoenix with temperatures finally pushing into the 100s, I can't help but think about the beginning pool season. And if you live near the ocean, then god bless you for the ability to enjoy your summer months on a beautiful beach. Both destinations have their appeal, and both inspire the desire to do some new swimsuit shopping.

There are several great bargain stores that offer tons of swimsuits at great prices: Delias, Gap, Kohl's, Old Navy and Target to name a few. Plus, you can also find some good sales on swimwear at places like JCrew, Victoria's Secret and most department stores.

Sure, you could go all out and buy a fancy, designer bikini, but really, ladies, why pay an arm and a leg for something that barely covers an arm or a leg? I'm no connoisseur of swimwear: I don't know the complexities of their construction, the subtle details or quality of fabric of high-end swimsuits. But, what I do know is that if I am going to update my swimwear wardrobe on a seasonal basis, I best invest in some reasonably priced swimsuits.

Real Housewives' Fashions

I admit it. I'm a fan of the Real Housewives franchise. It's my guilty pleasure. I pretty much watch all of them and revel in the crazy drama that is always brewing between these grown, seemingly classy, women. My favorite of all of them, though, is the New York City "housewives." And, by "housewives," I mean women who may or may not have husbands and who may or may not work. Aren't we all housewives then??? Anyway, I love the ladies from NYC because they seem to have a bit more edge, sophistication and, well, real money (well, with the slight exception of Alex and Simon) than all the other housewives (again, some exceptions should be made for some of the Beverly Hills housewives).

Because I love RHONY so much, I thought it would be great to do a post on these housewives' fashions. Seeing them week after week, I started noticing each of their distinct styles. And, I've decided to stick with the housewives I've come to know the longest, so Sonja and the new girl Cindy won't be included (Although, I'm starting to sense Sonja has the sexy style, while Cindy has the requisite downtown rocker-chick style.)

So, here we go...

Ramona loves a satin, jewel-toned dress -- preferable short with a bit of sassy. She must have stock in satin because photo after photo had her in some form-fitting satin cocktail dress. But, I suppose it represents Ramona well -- you can't miss bold colored satin on a bold and colorful lady.

Then, you have Jill, who tends to have a rather frenetic look -- one minute trendy, then cutesy and then sexy. She always seems to pick looks that are a bit fashion-forward, and sometimes a little too young for her look. But, somehow, they always work for her.

Oh, and of course, there is Luann. The Countess, Dahhhhling. She is the epitome of sophistication and class. Ms. Manners must always look perfect. And, she usually does. She likes to show-off her attributes, which seems to be her shoulders. She sticks with what looks good on her and doesn't stray from it.

Then, there is Alex. Oh, Alex. You try, honey, you really do. Sometimes she is on spot, and other times, it's like, what?! She is the trendiest of them all, with a strong desire to be avant garde, couture and fashion-forward all wrapped into one almost Bjork swan-like get-up. But, I have to say she has fashion guts and puts it out there for all to see.

Finally, there is Kelly. The fashion model. She's beautiful with a great body. She looks good in nearly everything, but it seems her favorite look is super short and flowy. When I think of her style, I think of the brands Free People and Urban Outfitters. Of course, she can afford a more sophisticated look that oozes that youthful, free-spirit, yet sexy look.

If I had to choose one RHONY housewife that represented my style, it would be tough. I like each of their styles and think I could encompasses them at some point in my life. But, if I must pick, I would have to combine the looks of the two most polar opposites: Luann and Kelly. I love the classic looks of Luann mixed with Kelly's quirky styling.

Let's Celebrate

It has been an amazing week! I have had the pleasure of sharing in the joy of my friends' accomplishments and important life moments. A co-worker (and friend) got a huge and well-deserved promotion on Wednesday. Then, on Friday, another co-worker and his wife became proud parents of a beautiful baby boy. And, to top off the week, one of my best friends found out she passed the California Bar.

When exciting and momentous things occur in my friends' lives, I reveal in it as much as I would if it was happening in my own. I cherish these people deeply and when good news arrives, I can't help but celebrate with them. Orange You Glad for Spring Trends?

Orange used to be my least favorite color. I always thought it was a tough color for anyone to pull off. But, then one day, I bought a coral colored top and realized...ehhh...not so bad. It's all about the shade of the orange. Being fair skinned with reddish blond hair, I figured out that a coral shade works best on me. And, I recently purchased a white and deep orange striped t-shirt that looks pretty good on me. Of course, I think most deeper colored oranges look better on dark haired and darker skinned people, they can work for others in moderation. And, even if your coloring doesn't work with any shade of orange, there are always accessories to add a pop of that refreshing color.

So, with this spring season's orange trend, don't be wary to take part in it, just figure out which shade works best and how much of it to flaunt. Have fun with it -- that's what the color is all about!

Inner Peace at a Bargain Price

After years of telling myself that it was time to turn down the stress and find my inner peace, I've finally decided to take a Yoga class. It's been long overdue and greatly needed. I think this class will be great for me, not only physically but spiritually. In this hectic world we live in, sometime we get too caught up in it and let the negativity build up in our lives. I am hoping the strength and energy I find in doing Yoga will counterbalance that and bring some much needed lightness and hope back to me.

And, of course, this wouldn't be a Bargain Chic post if I didn't also enjoy the fact that a new Yoga class means new Yoga clothes. Sure, Yoga isn't about your outward appearance -- gym shorts and a t-shirt would likely suffice, but there are just so many comfy looking Yoga pants and tops that I cannot resist picking up something new for my new class.

Unfortunately, new Yoga clothes come at a hefty price. Who knew simple cotton/spandex clothing could cost so much? I obviously didn't. Sorry, folks, I have a hard time justify spending over $50 bucks for a pair of Yoga pants or a tank top. That just isn't very Zen for my wallet.

However, I knew there had to be some bargain out there for what I'm willing to spend. And, lo and behold, there were. Old Navy has a small but decent selection, as does Kohl's and Target. Althelta (a subsidy of Gap, Inc.) has some okay sale items and some sporting good stores have good deals too. Here are my finds, with a deep breath and an "ommmmm."

I welcomed the week with a terrible case of food poisoning that literally knocked me off my feet. I'm still recuperating from it, but to make myself feel better and half way normal, I decided to venture out and take part in some retail therapy. It had been a while since I'd gone shopping and when I last visited the mall, I couldn't really find anything worthwhile to purchase. Today, though, I found some fantastic deals at LOFT. I've been a big fan of this Ann Taylor off-shoot for quite some time. If you look in my closet, you'll find most of my clothes are from LOFT. Lately, though, I've been less than inspired by what they've been selling. I'm still not really wow'd by their stuff, but they were having such a great sale -- additional 50% off sale item -- that I couldn't resist. I picked up three new tops, two of which I probably would have passed by on other occasions, but this time decided to try them on and found them to be adorable and oh so chic on me! Each item was no more than $20. What a steal!!! Cute clothes at a bargain price can make anyone feel better instantly!

I'm obsessed with Cee Lo's newest hit song "Forget You" (or if you'd prefer the actually title, "F**k You"). I'm a huge fan of the great Motown groups of the 60s, and this song totally reminds me of that musical style, but with a great new modern twist to it.

So, after watching the video about a million times (okay, so it was more like ten), I finally thought, hey, I need to do a blog post on Motown fashions. You know what I'm talking about -- the matching glamor gowns and tight shift dresses that all the great girl groups of the 60s wore. Well, here's my take on those looks with a modern twist. And I must say, the best online store for a modern twist on these looks is ModCloth. Dare to be Different

I guess you could say I'm on a self-improvement kick. My last post was about finding ones' unique self through their clothing, and now this post is expanding on that idea. I don't mean to get all self-helpy on you, but I'm just trying to live the message. And to live the message means to own what you believe and to share it with others. So, that's my goal -- own it and share it.

Dare to be different; explore a different side of yourself and have fun doing it. That's pretty much the point of fashion, right? And the easiest way to experiment with that daring side? Well, with shoes, of course. No matter your waist size, bust size, thigh size or shoe size, every woman can find a pair of shoes that lets them be whoever they want to be. So, go forth, and dare to find out who you are or who you want to be, and let that woman be as different and unique as she deserves to be.

Uniquely Me

I often think about how my clothes reflect my personality. And sometimes I wonder if I'm influencing my style or if it's the other way around. I don't know if one is better than the other, but either way is okay. We all inject our personalities in what we wear, and sometimes we wear things to help us become someone we want to be. And, in that sense, I use fashion to bridge my own gap between oddness and normalcy. I feel like who I really am is someone who doesn't take fashion too seriously -- who likes to mix things up, show a little skin and not be afraid to try something different. But, who I end up looking like is someone who does care about fashion -- who is a little more buttoned-up, demure and cautious.

I guess what I need to come to realize is that the two styles of me aren't mutually exclusive. I can embrace both and find common ground. That's the great thing about fashion -- the boundaries are far and wide. And, here are two examples that exemplify this notion. One is a little sexy and whimsical, while still being demure, and the other is a classic silhouette, but made of denim making it deliciously daring.

Reinventing the Basics

What's great about women's fashion is how diverse it is and how it is continually evolving. There is not one set style or piece of clothing that stays the same. Designers are always challenging the form and function of clothes, transforming the simple, the utilitarian, the nondescript into something unique, artful and interesting. The basics of clothing -- pants, tops, skirts, dresses -- are rarely created equally. The art of fashion design forces one to reinvent what has already been done a million times before, and that seem to me to be the most difficult thing for any kind of artist to accomplish. Yet every year designers get to showcase that talent and allow the public to be entranced by their cleverness and their inventiveness. And just like most art, it is subjective. One person's love for a designer could be another person's aversion. The hope is that one can appreciate the effort and skill put into the design, whether it is personally liked or disliked. And so, to that end, here are my subjective picks of what I consider to be my designer winners of this year's Fall RTW lines.

What I love about these looks: L-o-v-e the bright, bold green pants from Phillip Lim; enjoying the ethnic-preppy look from L.A.M.B; adore the fresh colored plaid suit with pops of color from Marc Jacobs; and drooling over the classic and sophisticated styling of Bill Blass.

What I love about these looks: Dying for what looks like a silk quilted, black-tie cinched jacket and velvet pencil skirt by Monique Lhuillier (How decadent can you get?!); can't get enough of the eggplant, form-fitting and Mad-Men inspiring shift from Oscar de la Renta; and obsessing over the fur-trimmed, opulent and slightly over-the-top look from Alice + Olive.

What I love about these looks: Wishing I was the first lady so I could wear this Jason Wu design fit for a classy lady at a classy event; feeling a little wild looking at the seductive and intriguing patterns of Anna Sui's dress; going ga-ga over Donna Karen's monochromatic and beautifully draped dress; and channeling that flirty and chic vibe from Jill Stuart's colorful and multi-dimension fabrics and patterns.

Fashion Dreams

When I was young, I wanted to be a model. I'm not sure why, except that maybe it came from watching the model competition on Star Search. Or maybe it was my infatuation with the models in the JcPenny's catalog, or the young girls in my favorite teen magazines. Perhaps it goes as far back as my first and only runway show at Sax Fifth Avenue at the ripe old age of seven.

(That's me in the middle, wearing the purple outfit. Apparently it was too preppy for me at the time, since when asked if I wanted to keep it, I stubbornly said, "No.")

What I do know is that for as long as I can remember I loved fashion, dressing up, and strutting my stuff. But, when I realized that my small 5' 4 1/2" frame would keep me from walking down the runway, I figured instead I could design the clothes that walked down the runway . I tried my hand at fashion design, drawing what I thought were pretty unique clothes. Unfortunately, all they were were drawings. I didn't quite know how to execute them -- aka, I didn't know how to sew. But coming up with the ideas were fun, and it got my creative juices flowing.

But, life goes on, and childhood dreams tend to go to the wayside for more practical ones. As an adult now, I unfortunately don't work in fashion, but my love of fashion is always evolving, and I'm glad I have the outlet of this blog to share my ideas.

And, so, this post is dedicated to my dream of working in the fashion biz. Although I never could have been a model and didn't really have the skills to be a fashion designer, what would have been awesome is to be a stylist like Rachel Zoe. It seems like that would be so much fun -- going to fashion shows looking at beautiful clothes, making friends with the designers and then playing dress up with the rich and famous.

So, in honor of my fashion dreams, and the upcoming dress-up dream called the Oscars, here are my picks for the gowns that I would love to see grace the red carpet. These are all from last week's Fall 2011 RTW fashion week in NYC. (All photos are from style.com.)

Pump Up the Volume

Black and brown pumps are soooo boring, and I have way too many of them -- low heel, mid heel, high heel, patent leather, suede, tassels, open-toe, closed-toe, slingback, t-strap. All the variations you could ever want in a heel, but no pizazz in the color department. I don't want to be boring pump girl anymore. I want to, instead, be outrageous, whimsical, colorful pump girl. (Okay, this is sounding a little dirty.) It's time for me to step outside the neutral nothingness of my black and brown pumps, and seek out some new colors to amp up my style. And these might just do the trick for getting me out of this colorless rut.

Glamorous Golden Globes Re-Cap

It has been a busy first month of the year for me, and reluctantly I've neglected this lovely, little blog. I had been meaning to do a post right after the Golden Globes to talk about my favorite gowns, but work and life seemed to have gotten in the way. You could say the non-glamorous side of my life, which is pretty much my only side, had knocked-out all sense or desire to think about the glamor that is the Golden Globes. But I'm back and ready to jump back into the thick of it.

It wasn't easy, though, because this year's Golden Globes seemed to be lacking something essential to award shows -- excitement. Sure glamor abounded the red carpet, but only because there were mega stars all around, dripping with diamonds and designer shoes. But nearly every actress I saw cascading down the row of paparazzi and reporters, seemed deflated and... well, bored. I wasn't thrilled either -- a lot of the dresses were humdrum.

At first glance, I liked Natalie Portman's dress, but the more I looked at it, the more I realized it really wasn't that flattering on her -- even as a pregnant woman. Portman tends to have a distinct fashion sense -- being the muse of Zac Posen and all -- so I was expecting more from her than this pink drapey number with a red rose busting out of her chest.

Speaking of pink, that seemed to be one of the colors of the night. However, the shades of pink on display were a little off for me. Bubble-gum pink is too cutesy and promish than, say, a pale, blush pink. Unfortunately, two actresses, whom I usually admire for their award show style, didn't pick the right shade of pink -- Lea Michele from Glee and Claire Danes. The style of the gowns were lovely, but the colors just didn't work for me.

Another favorite color of the night was green -- one of my favorite colors -- but for me most of the dresses in this color were a miss. Case in point: Angelina Jolie. I did not like that dress at all. I wanted to like it, but I think this shade of green was too green, and with her hair down it looked too casual. Maybe if she had worn her hair up, the whole look would have improved. I must give props, though, to Catherine Zeta Jone and Elizabeth Moss's green gowns -- the forest green shade was elegant and chic, however, I didn't like the ballerina-like fullness of Zeta Jones' dress or the odd pleats on Moss's dress.

Finally, the biggest disappointment of the night was January Jones' hideous red flapper-hooker dress. Just because a dress is made by a big-named fashion designer, doesn't make it fabulous. I know she likes to take fashion risks, but this one was a terrible mistake. She looked uncomfortable in it, and it didn't seem to fit her correctly. She is such a beautiful girl and has a great figure to pull off so many different looks, so seeing her in this number really threw me for a loop. (And, on a side note, I also hated Michelle Williams daisy dress. But, since she usually doesn't make the best fashion choices, I wasn't surprised. With that cute hair cut, she definitely did herself a disservice wearing an almost childlike, Easter Sunday dress.)

And, now onto my favorites. Anne Hathaway's floor-length, long-sleeve sparkler. Oh, so glamorous!!! It was totally over the top, and seemed like it probably weighed a ton, but it was perfect for her! Not many women could pull off a dress like that, and she did it beautifully. (And, since I know from watching The Rachel Zoe Project, that Rachel Zoe is her stylist, I must give her props on this one.)

Another favorite gown was one that I never saw while watching the pre-show, but saw it online afterward: Julie Stile's black, ruffled, one-shoulder gown. Amidst all the greens, pinks and sparkles, this was a refreshing and sophisticated look for an actress that isn't known much for her fashion style.

Finally, my other favorite gown of the night was Scarlett Johansson's glittery and fluttery champagne-colored gown. It was ethereal and whimsical, and I really adored it. I didn't really like her hairstyle for the night -- a view from the side made her look like the bride of Frankenstein -- but the rest of her look was magnificent.

And for those of us who want to look as glamorous as these ladies do, but can't quite pay an arm and a leg for it, here are some dresses that mimic the sophistication, elegance and whimsy of those looks at a much more affordable price.

Shoes Over Troubled Waters

Shoes to me are like that bridge over troubled waters -- they are on my side, when times get rough and friends just can't be found.

Despite the fact that I'm being slightly hyperbolic, shoes do make me happy. They are like wearable sculptures. And, when I'm feeling a little down in the dumps, seeing a beautifully crafted shoe puts a smile on my face.

Here is one such pair that I happened upon while perusing Neiman Marcus's online shoe collection. Its gravity defying elegance was so captivating that I instantly perked up and started fantasizing about wearing them.

It was Black Friday, and I couldn't resist. I wasn't with the crazy, get up at the crack-of-dawn, groups -- I don't play that game -- but, I did venture out a little later to the nearby outlet mall to do a little post-Thanksgiving retail therapy. The one place I was intent on visiting was the Banana Republic Outlet store. I had been receiving e-mail after e-mail alerting me to some major savings -- 40% off everything in their store, and since I needed to get some fresh, new clothes for the winter months, I figured what better time than now to get them. And, yippity-do-dah, did I find some great deals, and here is the proof in the pudding...

It took me many years to justify spending more than $50 for a purse. I was always adamant about not buying a designer purse just because it was a designer purse. But, I was on vacation, in Vegas, and I ventured into the Coach Outlet store. I gave in to temptation, and oh was I glad I did.

IKEA Bed

My old bed was still in good shape -- in fact, it now resides in one of my parent's spare rooms -- but I wanted a new bed and one that played off the shabby chic look of my bedroom. And, boy was I lucky to have found the bargain of all bargain beds at IKEA. Now, my room is exactly how I had envisioned it, and I love going to sleep and waking up in it every day!

Jewelry

I've never been much of a jewelry person. I put on an outfit and am never quite sure what jewelry goes with what, if less is more, or if should just say, forgetaboutit! But I am happy to say, I took a leap this year and started buying necklaces, earrings and even a cocktail ring.

Fall Finds: Part 2

I had another successful shopping excursion to Anthropologie a few weeks ago. I had been wanting to get this jacket for a few months after doing a post about it and thought it would be a nice treat for myself to get it.

Unfortunately, when I tried it on, it just didn't look right on me. The ruffles sat weirdly on me -- sticking straight out instead of lying more flat like it looks in the photo. But, lucky for me, my mom's eagle eye had picked out another cute jacket I had glossed over because I didn't think it was "right" for me. To appease her, I figured I'd try in on. And, I'm glad I did. It looked great on me and totally had that stylish military theme going on. I can't wait until it gets a bit cooler here in Phoenix so I can start wearing it with some dark wash jeans, trousers or a black pencil skirt (Note to self: get black pencil skirt.)

I also bought a couple other tops that evoked the sailor/sailing trend popular right now. One is a classic navy and white striped t-shirt that was only $10! I actually thought it was going to be more since the price tag showed $19.99, but it was my lucky day when I went to pay and the sales clerk told me it was actually only $9.95. Don't you love moments like that?

The other top is another striped one -- a cute yellow and white striped cardigan/sweater with some rope-like detailing on the front. Very chic to wear with just about anything and still appropriate, I think, to wear in this transition months before winter. (I always like to wear color year round.)

In the end, the total for all three tops were as much as that initial jacket I was dying to have. So, I'd say it was definitely another delightful trip to my all-time favorite store. Yippee!

My previous posts have all been about the new looks for spring, but I'm going to switch gears and return to our current season -- Autumn. This time of year is my favorite. Although in Phoenix, we don't really experience typical fall weather, the nights do start to get cooler and with that comes the anticipation of the holidays and the warmth and comfort that they bring. Also, it means I can start wearing a whole new set of clothes.

And, with that in mind, I'd like to share with you some lovely looking fall pieces I came across while perusing Anthropologie's online store. The lovely harvest colors of this jacket and dress are so inviting, and I love the whimsy of the jacket's front ruffles and the big tweed bow on the Mad-Men-esque dress.

So, while looking through the hundreds of pictures of different fashion shows, I noticed quite a few attempts at bringing back the MC Hammer pants of the early 90s. Okay, so they aren't really calling them MC Hammer pants -- rather harem pants -- but to me, whenever I see them, all I hear in my head is the song "U Can't Touch This."

Despite the prevalence of MC...ahem...harem pants on the runways, I did come across a few pant looks that I would feel comfortable wearing out in public, without the sudden urge to do the crab dance. Here are just a couple of the looks I found the most enticing -- slim cropped pants, high-waisted pants, both satiny in bright, bold colors. Enjoy!

NY Fashion Week: Part 1

New York's Spring 2011 Ready-to-Wear Fashion Week has come and gone, and as someone who loves to look at the glitz and glamor of designer duds but who rarely indulges in them, I took a moment this weekend to peruse the multitude of fashion show slide shows on www.style.com.

Of the shows I looked at, a few things became abundantly clear -- the minimalism of the 90s is back, as is sheer tops and dresses, and muted, neutral colors. Another big trend seems to be a resurgence of the 70s look -- bohemian-inspired maxi dresses and loud prints.

There were some standouts in my fashion opinion. Since I tend to gravitate towards more refined, girly and sophisticated looks, the simpler or more eclectic designers didn't really intrigue me, although the African-inspired prints and intermix of patterns front L.A.M.B were fun. And, I also liked the luminous colors that Marc Jacobs and Carlos Miele used in their designs -- when I think of Spring, I think the rebirth of color, not blah nude, beige and white.

So, here is Part 1 of some of my favorite finds during my scavenger hunt for fashion. Unfortunately, I can't offer any bargain alternatives, since opulent fashion begets economical fashion, and most of these styles won't hit stores for awhile. I will, however, try in earnest to scour the web for some fabulous bargain chic styles in the weeks to come. But, in the meantime, enjoy these finds and get ready for the trends to take shape.

I'm in the midst of a cold -- a stuffy nose, plugged ears, sore throat and coughing kind of cold. Yeah, one that knocks you off your four-inch heels and keeps you in bed all day long, watching daytime t.v. and filling up on homemade chicken noodle soup.

But, as I drowned in nose spray and Kleenex, I had a thought. I'll do a post on sexy shoes.

Uh, yeah. What?!

I had to laugh at myself. Sexy shoes? That is so far from how I'm feeling right now. In fact, sexy isn't even in my vocabulary -- sick or not. It's one of those words that people say means many things to different people, but to me, it means "not me." I may be cute or feisty, at best, but sexy, nah -- that just isn't me.

But, then again, maybe "sexy" could be me. I mean, what woman wouldn't feel sexy in a pair of leather, zip-up, stiletto boots (yeah, you might not be able to walk in them, but damn, you'll look good trying!), or in a sophisticated peep-toe pump a la Joan from Mad Men -- she oozes sexiness without even trying. Maybe being sexy is as simple as feeling sexy in whatever you're wearing.

Wow, was that an epiphany or just the realization that, duh, sexiness is relative?

Well, whatever the case may be, here are the inspiration shoes that helped me reach that rather obvious epiphany. Hopefully they can inspire you to find your own sexiness.

Emmy Inspirations

I'd say the most enjoyable part of award shows is before the event even begins -- the red carpet extravaganza of fashion and beauty. I love seeing all the glitter, glitz and glamor, but what I love even more is being a fashion critic as I thumbs up or thumbs down each gown that passes by the cameras. And at this year's Emmy's, the critic was in full effect. For the most part, I'd say a majority of the gowns were rather prosaic -- boring and kind of dull. But, in the midst of those ho-hum gowns, I did see a few that had me sitting up and taking notice.

It seems the popular ruffle trend is still going strong, and one gown in particular took that trend to a whole new level of sophistication. Lea Michele of Glee wore a stunning navy blue gown that epitomizes the meaning of gown -- it was extravagant, luxurious and whimsical. Another gown that took my breath away was Modern Family's Sophia Vergara's. The yellow and gold sequins gown was reminiscent of old Hollywood, but with a nicely shaped modern flair. And, finally, there was the sexy and stunning cocktail dress worn by Heidi Klum. I don't think anyone but Heidi Klum could pull that dress off -- that is, unless you have legs up to your ears and a vivacious personality to match.

Since most of us ordinary people will probably never get to wear gowns like these, let alone attend an award show, I thought it would be fun to find outfits inspired by these gowns. I didn't want to just find dresses that were similar, but take the style or trend of the gown and find comparable looks that exude the same essence.

Going to the Chapel...Someday

Have you seen the show "Say Yes to the Dress?" If you haven't, I'll catch you up to speed. The show takes place at the renowned Kleinfeld in Manhattan and follows the ups and downs of brides-to-be searching for their perfect wedding dress. It's one of my guilty pleasures. I get such a kick out of some of these women who spend thousands of dollars on a dress they will wear for a few hours. They've dreamt about their wedding since they were little girls playing dress up, and now that big day has come and they must find that ONE dress that makes them feel like a princesses. Uh.... okay... barf. Whew... it took me a whole five sentences before I showed my jaded, unromantic side. I lasted longer than I had expected.

Okay, okay... I'm being rather insensitive. I mean, I do watch the show, and, I'll admit it, I do think about what kind of wedding dress I'd want, where I'd like to get married.... oh, yeah, and the man of my dreams... who, at this point, is no where to be found. Which, by the way, is kind of an essential part of getting married. But, then again, that shouldn't stop a girl from dreaming.... right?!

So, as I cringe and look wistful at the same time (that's a hard look to pull off), dreaming of that perfect wedding, I present to you my slightly unromantic, romantic dress choices. And because I've never had a complete picture of what I'd wear on my wedding day, where I'd wear it or whom I'd wear it for, I'm all over the board on what style I like. The one thing I do know is that I enjoy unfussy, classic looks, with a twist of something unique and a little unexpected. And, depending on the locale -- either my church, an intimate "Old Mexican" chapel in Sedona, or eloping (and for my future, unknown fiance's sake, there is likely many other potential locations, but I've decided at this moment to narrow it down to places I've actually thought about in my absurd fantasizing mind), each of these dresses would fit nicely into said locations.

P.S.: These are very un-bargain-like wedding dresses, with the exception of the cocktail dress. But since you only get married once (fingers-crossed), this definitely is one item you should splurge on!

Dream Vacations: Greek Islands

I think it has something to do with the blanket of white stucco buildings overlooking the deep blue Aegean Sea, but looking at photos of Greece always seems to draw me in and sweep me away to a mystical place where I begin to understand why the Greeks worshiped gods like Dionysus and Aphrodite.

The islands surrounding mainland Greece feel like a time capsule from a long forgotten past. They evoke a sense of tranquility and seclusion that you can't find in many other places. And with that feeling of serenity comes a relaxed sense of style -- soft and flowy fabrics, contrasting colors playing off the whites and blues of the surrounding scenery, and fashions reminiscent of times past.

It's a place that can be describe as simply dreamy. Hopefully someday, I can make that dream come true. But in the meantime, my fantasy includes these cool, refreshing looks that could take me from lounging days on a blindingly white patio to crisp nights under the stars with my very own Adonis.

Dream Vacations: Amalfi Coast

During my short hiatus from posting -- which was not, unfortunately, due to being on vacation, but in fact due to long hours at work and a slight lazy streak -- I started to wistfully think about my impending two week vacation. I wish I had planned a dream vacation somewhere magical, romantic or exotic. Alas, I did not. I'm sticking around town, maybe taking a stay-cation at a local resort or heading up north for some cooler temps. But, that hasn't stopped me from my dreaming. And, so, for the next few weeks, I'll be taking you through a fashion journey of my dream vacation locations.

First up -- the Amalfi Coast. Maybe it has something to do with the movie Under the Tuscan Sun, but the look and feel of this place seems magical. The idea of being perched up on a mountain's side, overlooking a cerulean sea, with tan, deliciously hot Italian men walking around, seems, well... like a dream come true.

Positano, Italy

Finding a style that fits this idyllic place had me a bit stumped -- there seems to be more to their milieu than beaches and mountains. It seems to be a place that is unencumbered by life's expectations; a place that doesn't take itself too seriously and enjoys the beauty of simplicity. The message tee: they're fun, they're witty, and some are just plain ridiculous. Whatever idea, mood or attitude you'd like to convey, there is a message tee for that. If they weren't frowned upon at work, I'd wear one everyday. It would be a succinct way to let people know how I'm feeling that day. This may shock some people, but sometime I like to think that I'm a woman of few words. Yes, I have a tendency to yap on and on about politics, the Real Housewives of NYC or the rude driver that cut me off on my way to work, but sometimes I'd rather not talk... or be bothered to communicate with anyone, for that matter. So, I think a daily rotation of message tees would be awesome!

I'm not a huge sports fan, and I don't really follow any one particular sport. But I do support all my hometown teams, and right now my all-time favorite sports team, the Phoenix Suns, are in the finals and my inner sports nut is going crazy. And what puts the cherry on top is that they are playing the Lakers -- my nemesis, the thorn in my side, the Cain to my Abel... I think you get the picture.

Summer Standards Revisited

For me, summertime fashion is all about comfort and relaxation. Flip-flops, t-shirts, tank tops and a pair of worn-in shorts usually completes my summer wardrobe. Throw in pony-tailed hair, minimal make-up and a wishfully realistic (but very fake) tan, and I'm ready for a three month hiatus from reality!

Sometimes, though, that "comfortable" look can come across as a little... hmm... lazy. Sure, it's called the dog days of summer for a reason, but that doesn't always mean you have to look the part. So, my remedy is to punch up those summer standards with a splash of brightly colored shorts and a crisp, white shirt. Add some cute sandals and maybe a flirty piece of jewelry, and your look is ready for a sizzling summer ahead.

If you've ever taken an art class, visited a museum or been given a finger painting by a five year old, you've probably heard that little voice in your head whisper that well-known phrase, "art is subjective." You try to appreciate what you can, yet sometimes you still look at a Pollock painting and think it looks just like that tarp you used to catch all your painting mishaps. Or perhaps that extraordinarily expensive gallery piece looks a lot like the decoupage vase your niece gave you for your birthday. In any case, art is -- or, at least, should be -- about emotion and connection. Whatever interests you, moves you, inspires you, is what makes art art to you. So, here is some art that does all of the above for me, and more.

Vintage Inspiration - Part 2

Keeping with my vintage theme, I wanted to share a few great and inexpensive vintage-inspired dress I came across while perusing the web. There are a handful of online stores that catering to this look. ModCloth is a great place to start, and of course there is always the quirky and clever Anthropologie. Some other fringe stores include Fred Flare, Plasticland, and a few more unknown stores like Red Dress Shoppe and Shabby Apple.

If you are lucky enough to live in an area that has some cool vintage clothing stores, those are great place to find the building blocks for a vintage look. I just recently found a cool vintage shop called Hollywood Regency Vintage that carries vintage clothes for men and women from the 40s through the 80s. They have a great collection of dresses, hats and shoes, and the prices aren't bad if you're looking for a one-of-a-kind outfit.

My only caveat with buying vintage is to find a way to modernize the look. Whether it be adding a current trendy accessory or keeping your hair and makeup modern, doing so will make your look more fashion-forward than costume-inspired.

Vintage Inspiration

Perhaps I've seen too many HGTV shows, read too many Better Homes & Gardens , or have let my current obsession with the History Channel's "American Pickers" or the awe inspiring Bravo reality design/family show "9 by Design" take over my design thoughts. But currently -- as in, right now, as I'm typing this -- I am officially declaring my future design choices to be vintage inspired. That means, antique vintage, modern vintage (or as early mid-century modern as I can possibly let myself become), and vintage-inspired home decor will begin to find its way into my home.

I just recently made some purchases that play homage to that shabby chic vintage feel so many girly, girls (or wishful girly girls -- i.e., me) subscribe to. I just love the homey, comfy feel that design aesthetic exudes.

So with that as my starting point, I'm starting to look for unique pieces to add to the other rooms in my home. There are several stores in the Phoenix metro area that have some great vintage finds at all prices (Antique Gatherings at 36th St & Indian School Rd; the 7th Ave vintage shops like Melrose Vintage, Rust & Roses and Retro Ranch; and several others near uptown Phx and Cave Creek & Cactus), and most other cities have these kind of stores too. And you could even be lucky enough to live in a city where there are awesome flea markets where antique finds are easy to come by.

And, if you are so inclined, there is a plethora of online stores that allow you to spend hours -- even days -- perusing their many antique and vintage offerings. Below are some inspiring pieces I found on Etsy and a website called Paris Hotel Boutique.

I'm a little bit in love with these cute flats from Nordstroms. I came across them a few weeks ago in Nordstroms' Spring Catalog and was instantly drawn to them -- probably because of the color (one of my favorite) and the quirky (but so on trend) petal bow. And, at a fairly reasonable (and, cross-my-fingers, potential for a markdown) price of $49.95, it is a great way to add a pop of color and whimsy to any outfit.

The temps are rising in the desert, and with that comes daydreaming of summertime fun. Okay, maybe not the 115 degree summertime inferno fun, but the idyllic dreams of escaping to a near-by beach or lounging around a pool sipping, you guessed it, pina coladas. Of course it doesn't help that the stores are pushing out their spring/summer clothes with adorable beach dresses, crisp-white capris and sailor stripes on everything. And so, I was tempted. I just had to share with everyone a great deal I found this weekend at Dillard's. An Antonio Melani skirt regularly priced at $129 that was just waiting for me to find it for only... $39! Yes, ladies and some fine gentlemen, that is, how do you say, an awesome deal! So, let the lesson be learned -- be patient and persistent and you too can grab a great deal like moi.

Because this find is just too good to not document, here is a picture of me in the skirt. And, not that it is a huge deal, but this is the first time you'll see the real TeeKay -- face & all! I never really planned on making this blog that anonymous, but I guess it is time to step out from behind the curtain and reveal that I am not in fact the great and powerful Wizard of Oz. Decorating for Less: Part One

The new year always makes me think about all the things that I would like to accomplish during the year. This year in particular, I've been thinking about all the home improvement projects I'd like to do. So over the next few weeks and months, I'll be writing about some of my decorating ideas, and how to accomplish them for less.

First up: my bedroom. Over the last year, I had been mulling over the idea of getting a new bed. The one I currently have is decent, although maybe a little dated, but it doesn't really go with the look I'm trying for in my bedroom. I've got the whole shabby chic decor going on, and I've been wanting to get either a white iron bed frame or step it up a notch and a get an upholstered headboard. The iron beds are fairly inexpensive, whereas the upholstered ones can be quite pricey. I did a little Web surfing, and found a few affordable options that I could certainly be happy with.

Last weekend I went on a girls getaway to Vegas. It was a much needed mini-vacation from every day worries and stresses, and I had a blast. And what made it even more outstanding was a quick (I use that term loosely) stop at one of the best outlet malls I've ever been to. Just down the strip was a place I shall call the Holy Grail of bargains: Las Vegas Premium Outlets. It had oodles of stores I love, and one in particular that I was dying to visit -- Coach Outlet. Being the fashion bargainista that I am, I had peeked inside another outlet store about six months earlier but felt the prices were still too high for me, so I left empty handed. But this time, I was determined to find a pursue at a great deal, and by golly, I think I did! (I shall not reveal the exact price, but just know that it still fit the bill for what I deem a "bargain.")

Come-Hither Wear

Being a single gal, who hasn't been on a date in a while and who, by some standards, is a tad conservative when it comes to those so-called "date rules," I don't really have a stockpile of lingerie in my underwear drawer. In fact, my bras are mostly nude-colored, with the exception of a few black bras I wear very rarely. This affliction towards boring underthings may be due to my small, um, stature. For some reason, lingerie stores just don't carry my diminutive size -- do they think I don't want to look sexy? Because of my small size, I need help looking sexy -- or I might get mistaken for an adolescent boy!

So, the point of my rather revealing op-ed on being a small-chested and self-proclaimed "conservative" dater, is that I don't have to worry about having a drawer overflowing with lingerie. Instead, these come-hither wears are coming out from under the covers and revealing themselves in fashionable looks you can wear outside the bedroom. Forget about that third date rule -- you can seduce your date with a lingerie-inspired outfit on the first, second or even fifth date.

And I guarantee, this look will WOW him enough to keep asking you out until you want to break the rules and bring the lingerie back to the bedroom!

A Decade of Trends

It is a new year. And if you can believe it, a new decade! It seems like this past decade was filled with so much.... stuff! From 9-11 to the war in Iraq to the boom of social media to the election of the first black American president. It is hard to believe those things and so much more happened in just ten years!

And then you have the fashions of the 00's -- every decade has their claim to fame, and all I can think of for this past decade is leggings. They seem to have taken root mid-decade and never left. But, oh, how I hope their ridiculousness ends soon. Yes, they're comfortable, but only about 1% of the population can really pull them off. Otherwise, they just look silly -- kind of like stirrup pants.

The other trend of the '00s has to be the HUGE bags. You know what I'm talking about ladies -- the kind that could quite possibly hold a toddler in it. I never quite understood why a leggy, pin-thin lady needed a purse she could literally folder herself into. Status symbol? Or, a quick escape? Whatever the reason, unless you need to carry your entire life's necessities around with you all day long, let go of the over-sized handbags... PLEASE!

And, finally, the two trends that will probably be staying around a bit longer -- the skinny jeans and the ankle boots. Okay, I'll admit, I own a pair of both. Not a true pair of skinny jeans, but as close as I will get. Yeah, they can be sexy and cute on some women, but for most, they just don't work. Same with those silly ankle boots. Unless you have legs up to your nose and they're shaped like twigs, ankle boots do absolutely nothing for most women's legs.

We've all be victims to at least one of these trends this decade, and that's fine -- it's fun to experiment with fashion and doing so is really the only way one can find their true style. I think I've finally found my fashion style -- classic pieces with a twist of whimsy and funk. And I hope to play on more of that whimsy and funk this year; to take some risks and think outside the box. And that may mean I'll try some of those trends that won't work, and some that I can add to my collection. But either way, it will be exciting to see what's in store for this new decade.

Christmas is one of my favorite holidays -- I love baking cookies, wrapping presents, spending time with family and, of course, decorating. My place is relatively small, but I always love adding new decorations to my growing collection of holiday ornaments and tchotchkes. Decorating always gets my in the spirit of the holidays, and I wanted to share some of the spirit with you.

Here are some photos of my Christmas decorations. Being a Phoenix girl, we don't really get that wintry Christmas feel (i.e.: cold temps & snow), so my little inside "winter-wonderland" look has helped me get that cozy and festive feeling.

Pure Dead Brilliant

The Scots are a funny bunch -- they like to laugh; they like to drink; and they do both in their famous Scottish brogue. Their delightful and robust attitude towards life is enough for me to adore their culture. But what makes them even better are two special gifts they unknowingly gave to the fashion world: plaid & houndstooth -- two prints that have withstood the test of time.

Every decade from the late 19th century until today has seen its share of clothing bedecked in plaid or houndstooth. From ornate and cumbersome Victorian dresses to the grunge flannels of Gen-Xers, these prints have carried us through every trend, every style and every piece of clothing we've worn.

And this season is no different. Plaids and hounstooth are back and as the Scots like to say, "pure dead brilliant!" From sexy, curve-hugging dresses to boisterous pumps, these prints are ready to make an imprint on a new century.

Couture Halloween

Halloween is one of my most favorite holidays. Although I don't dress up or celebrate it the way I used to, I still enjoy the silliness and spookiness of it all. This year my work had a Halloween BBQ and a few people dressed up, including me (I was Betty Draper from Mad Men). It was so much fun to have one day where people indulged in a little fantasy -- whether it was something scary or ghoulish, or outrageous or funny.

And that is what made me starting thinking about the fantasy element of fashion. There are a few designers, like Galliano, Lacroix and Gaultier, who transform their fantasies into beautifully dramatic clothing and display them in fantastical and theatrical runway shows.

Below is the inspiration for this post. It is a Galliano dress from his Spring 2010 Ready to Wear show in Paris. To me the dress exuded a slightly macabre yet deliciously seductive sensibility. Exactly what the fantasy of Halloween is all about!

Where the Wild Things Are

Just like the title from the beloved children's book, Where the Wild Things Are is a great testament to the fashion world's raucous love affair with animal prints. Whether it be the sultry spots of a leopard or the unruly stripes of a tiger, fashion is indebted to these frisky felines. And this season, animal prints are all the rage.

Taken in small doses -- a belt, shoes or a bag -- this bold print can add a bit of spice and sexiness to a simple outfit. Or, in bigger doses, like a dress or blouse, the look can be dramatic and awe-inspiring. Just be careful, though. Too much animal print can make you look more like a cat on a walk than a fabulous woman on a catwalk.

Fifteen Minutes of Fashion Fame

It seems over the past few years every celebrity with fifteen minutes or fifteen years of fame has started a clothing, accessory or shoe line. Many of these attempts have failed and been forgotten, while a few have managed to succeed and have longevity in the fickle fashion world.

Of the celebrity fashion lines that have risen above the fray, they all vary in price and style. From Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen's Elizabeth & James' purposefully disheveled and trendy fashions to Bono & wife's eco-friendly t-shirt and casual wear Edun brand, some celebrity clothing lines are, in my opinion, a bit overpriced and, well, boring.

But then comes a long a few gems. And by gems, I mean clothing and shoe lines that are trendy yet chic, classy yet daring, and affordable yet luxe-looking. Yes, there are some celebrity clothing lines like L.A.M.B. and Sienna Miller's Twenty8Twelve that are on the pricier side, but their stuff looks high quality and, yeah, wearable.

Here are a sampling of some celebrity clothing and shoe lines -- which, by the way, have some hits and misses in their collections, but nevertheless have a few stellar pieces that stand out.

A Handmade Tale

Once upon a time, a sprightly young girl was salvaging through the vast and often unpredictable forest we shall call "the Web" looking for some unique and undiscovered accessories. She wanted jewelry that wasn't mass produced or purses that every other woman had hanging from their shoulder. She wanted... an Etsy-find!

She quickly typed in e...t...s...y... .com, and was whisked away into a word of quirkiness and eccentricities. A place where craftiness wasn't a trait to condemn, but a valuable asset to promote.

She found handmade items galore and vintage finds a plenty -- she had found the mother lode of unique and wondrous gems: peacock headband, lovely necklaces, chic convertible totes and rose petal scarves. And the prices weren't bad either!

With a wave of excitement, she clicked "Buy," "Buy," "Buy," and was elated in knowing that her finds were exactly what she was looking for.

When they finally arrived at her front porch, she was excited to try them on. She starred confidently at herself in the mirror, knowing that she would carry these one-of-a-kind pieces with love and pride.

From that day on, she was hooked on that magical place called Etsy!

Etsy-a Great Find

If you haven't yet heard of the handcrafter's marketplace called Etsy, then I beg of you to visit the Web site immediately and peruse the countless hand crafted jewelery, clothes, art pieces, furniture and antiques that populate this wonderful collection of people's varied talents. And, because there is so much to view, the site designers have added some very functional features for discovering the many treasures that can be found there.

In my curious visits to the Editors' Picks, Gift Guides and Featured Artists, not to mention the daily newsletter of themed finds, I have come across some one-of-a-kind pieces that are affordable and memorable. It's also a bonus helping out independent artists and designers. I always imagine how happy they must be for every purchase; knowing that someone wants their creation.

In an effort to promote independent labels, I'll be doing a few series of blogs highlighting some great pieces I've discovered on Etsy.
